GENEALOGY COMMITTEES

Members and friends doing genealogy research to uncover and document the names of our ancestors from 3 generations after John Marriott, Sr. on back in history is the major goal of the John Marriott Historical Society. We hope to document this information with the facts, including census, christening, birth, marriage, death, etc. records. Once we have found and documented their names, we can search for family histories, biographies, diaries, family bibles, photos, newspaper articles, etc.

GENERAL CHAIR: Jackie Westergard

Genealogy Research Projects Subcommittee

The society funds critical genealogical research projects for the family and manages the family’s current official research projects done by our amateur genealogists. The encouragement, training and critical path planning for these projects comes from this subcommittee.

Functions:

  1. Manage the research projects jointly with the Marriott Heritage Foundation in Marriott/Sladerville.
  2. Manage the research projects done by our family member, Omen Tracy, where we hire him to do our work as a professional genealogist.

Chair: position open

Committee Members: positions open

Projects:

  1. Find the connection that might exist to France to connect to Marriott’s there.
  2. Digital preservation of original records, documents, photos, etc. found by Hermoine Jex, now in her home, to be put on CD and in a JMHS bank vault with other records and available to members on CD. Mike Wright has a scanner to use for JMHS work- (Christine Watters & Mike Wright)

LDS Temple Work Subcommittee

Mission
John Marriott, himself, was the early family genealogist. He made sure that his son John Marriott, Jr. had LDS temple work done for the family in the Nauvoo and Salt Lake Temples and Endowment House. We wish to continue their work, by making sure that the excellent genealogical records that helped us locate our ancestors are used to do LDS temple work for those where the work is not complete.

Functions:

  1. Continue the work of Jackie Westergard to make sure that all names that we have secured are presented to the LDS Genealogy Society and have their LDS temple work completed by society members or others. Check the LDS Ancestral and other Research Data Files to see if LDS temple work has been done.

Ancestors Lists Subcommittee

Mission
The web site does an excellent job of providing us ancestor lists. We need to make sure they are complete for the targeted 3 generations after John Marriott, Sr. This makes it easy for us amateurs to find ancestor lists and study our family history. We need to train each other in how to do this search.

Functions:

  1. To be determined.

Descendents Lists Subcommittee

Mission
There are literally thousands of ancestors of John Marriott, Sr. How many do you know?

Functions:

  1. Work with the Bath, Ohio company that produces lists of families from the national phone books. This is a great way to provide us with connectivity to others we do not know who are potential relatives. I could also help us locate potential ancestor organizations that we do not know of. It has listings of families like the Marriott and Burtons in the U.S. and other countries.
  2. Create and with our member communications subcommittee, maintain our own list of ancestors (just a name, address, phone and email list- not a genealogical record or family history) down to the present, with the help of the Red Book and our 9/27/97 membership listing.

Genealogy Training Subcommittee

Mission
Our history has shown that there may be 1 to 4 true professional genealogists, like Omen Tracy and Jackie Westergard, in our family tree. This is a challenging fact to realize, when genealogy is the #1 goal of our society. Because of this reality, we must not expect to depend on professional for the success of our work and reaching our goals. It will take a large number of amateurs like you and me to make this work happen. We want to rely on help from our resident pros, but also the growing genealogical organizations throughout the country who are providing help through government agencies and of course the largest source, which is the genealogical library system of the LDS Church. We want to lean on these people to train our members who want to “do the work”. Our job is to be the connection to that training and provide what we can ourselves.

Functions:

  1. Provide information on the website for genealogy training for research.
  2. Connect through links to internet genealogy resources like www.myfamily.com and www.ancestralsearch.com and organizations like Everett Publishing and their Handibook.

Genealogy Tips Subcommittee

Mission
Because genealogical research is such a key piece of our society, we fracture that topic many (maybe too many) ways. We envision many youngsters and oldsters wanting to do some amateur research. They don’t want to get too confused with the details and don’t want to even think of becoming a genealogist or go to training. For these people, we want to offer genealogy tips in an easy to ready format that already exists from other organizations. We don’t want to reinvent the wheel. The “stuff” is already there. We just need to find it and put it on the website.

Functions:

  1. To be determined.

Chair: position available

Committee Members: positions available

Genealogy Research Questions Subcommittee

Mission
As our website become well know as a source of research information, the Marriott’s and many other connected lines will use our website as a resource to do their own work. We will receive many genealogical research questions to try to link to our work for the completion of their down-lines. We need people to respond to those questions.

Functions:

  1. Provide a group of people who are familiar enough with our family genealogy to respond by email or phone or letter to inquiries that come to the society.
  2. Set a process for inquiry responses, deadlines and format recommendations.
  3. Determine those things we will not do and publish those on the website.

Chair: position available

Committee Members: positions available

Projects:

  1. To be determined.
