John Marriott - Funeral
The largest funeral ever held in Marriott was that of John Marriott, which
took place Monday at 2 o'clock P.M. The services were held in the meeting
house and Bishop James Richie presided. The choir sang, "God Moves in
Mysterious Way." Prayer was offered by Elder Joseph, followed by the
hymn, "Oh, My Father."
President L. W. Shurtliff spoke eloquently in tribute to the work
of the deceased as a pioneer in the county and state who was amongst
the few men who made the western part of America habitable by white
men. He also spoke of the religious integrity and consistency of
the deceased, and gave good counsel and words of consolation to those
bereft.
President G. F. Middleton told of the conversion of the deceased
fifty-six years ago, and of his steadfastness ever since, his experience
extending all through the Nauvoo persecutions and the hardships of
pioneer days in Utah. He spoke upon the loyalty of the deceased to
his church relations.
